Maud Fence Panel – Black-Sprayed Spruce
A deep, even black boundary for a fraction of what it looks like: that is the Maud panel. Every one of its thirty boards is spray painted at the factory before it reaches you, so the colour sits flat and consistent across the whole panel, without the patchy brushwork of staining a fence yourself.
The rhombus profile angles each board so the panel throws sharp diagonal shadow lines that move through the day, giving you privacy without the closed-in feel of solid panelling. It is built from PEFC certified spruce (Picea abies) and screwed throughout with stainless steel, so nothing rusts or streaks down the face. Stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland at a full 1800 x 1800 mm.
Why spruce?
Spruce is the softwood that makes a black fence affordable. It is light, straight grained and machines cleanly, which is why it planes to the smooth surface a sprayed finish needs. A rough sawn board drinks paint unevenly and shows every fibre; a planed spruce board takes the coat flat and holds it. Cheap timber plus a factory finish is how you land an architectural black boundary at softwood money.
Here is the honest part. Spruce has almost no natural durability of its own, so this panel depends entirely on its coating and on how you detail it. That is not a flaw, it is the trade you accept for the price. Keep the paint sound and the timber clear of standing water and it will serve you for years.
Installation guidance
Fitting these is well within reach if you have hung a fence panel before. Each one arrives at full height ready to drop between your posts, so most of the work is in setting the uprights square and plumb. They sit comfortably between 70 x 70 mm timber posts or 100 x 100 mm concrete posts, fixed with corner brackets.
Two details are worth getting right. Set the bottom of the panel a few centimetres clear of ground level rather than letting it sit in soil or pooling water, because that is where a painted softwood fence fails first. And note that this is a single sided panel: the face in the photo is the finished side, and the rear shows the frame. Where both sides of a run are on view, plan to hang panels back to back.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two legitimate routes and neither is wrong. Leave it be and the black will soften and lighten gradually under UV, which still reads well against planting and asks nothing of you. Or top it up and hold that showroom black indefinitely, which means a fresh coat every year or two depending on how exposed the run is. Most of our customers choose the second, because the colour is the reason they bought a black fence.
When you re-coat, use a quality black exterior wood paint or stain and steer clear of film forming gloss paints and yacht varnishes. On outdoor softwood those crack, lift and trap moisture behind the film. We stock the right ones, so ask us which to pair with yours. Whichever route you take, an occasional wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush lifts grime and keeps the diagonal lines crisp.
