12 mm hardwood plywood is the general purpose thickness and the one most people end up buying. It is stiff enough to walk on over joists and to carry a reasonable load on a shelf, and still light enough to handle alone.
Loft boarding over the joists is the most common job, because at 12 mm the board spans between normally spaced joists without flexing underfoot, which is the point at which a loft becomes usable for storage rather than just accessible. Garage and shed shelving is next: with supports at sensible spacings a 12 mm shelf will take paint tins, tools and boxes without bowing over time. It is also the usual substrate under a laminate worktop and the base of a built in cupboard.
Cutting and handling
At 18.9 kg one person can carry and cut a sheet, though a full one is awkward on a ladder. Cut good face upwards with a fine toothed blade and support the sheet along the line rather than just at the ends. If you are boarding a loft, set the boards out so a sheet edge always lands on a joist: an edge left hanging between joists will flex every time you step on it and break down along that line.
Fixing and painting
Screw through the face, and pilot anything going near an edge, because poplar splits along the grain more readily than a hardwood core would. Leave a small gap at the edges of a loft floor and stagger the joints rather than lining them all up, since board laid tight to the walls has nowhere to go when it takes up moisture in the summer and lifts in the middle. Seal the edges before painting.
Where not to use it
Not in a damp or outdoor situation: that is what marine plywood is for. If the shelf is spanning further or holding something genuinely heavy, go up to 18 mm rather than adding another bracket. There is more on the range on the hardwood faced plywood page and the plywood page.
