25 mm hardwood plywood is the heavy option in the range, for a surface that has to stay flat with nothing underneath it. It is the thickness people buy when 18 mm has already been tried and sagged.
Serious workbench tops are the main job. A bench that carries a machine, takes a vice at one end and gets hammered on wants a top that does not flex, and at 25 mm it does not. It is thick enough to bolt a vice through properly and to take a bench dog without breaking out underneath. Long shelves with widely spaced supports, the base under a heavy tool or a stone worktop, and platform floors that carry more than storage are the others, along with a temporary ramp or load spreading board where a thinner sheet would crack across the middle.
Cutting and handling
At 37.9 kg a full sheet is a genuine two person lift and it will not go in most cars. Check your saw before you order, because plenty of cordless circular saws will not clear 25 mm at full depth and none of them will at an angle; if you cannot cut it yourself, work your sizes out first. Cut slowly with a sharp blade and let the saw do the work, since a thick soft core loads a blade and will burn if you push it.
Fixing and painting
Bolt rather than screw wherever the fixing has to hold real load. The core is poplar, and however thick the board is a screw is still biting into a soft timber. Seal both faces, particularly on a bench top, which will see spills on one side and damp air on the other.
Where not to use it
Thickness does not make it weatherproof, so anything outdoors or persistently damp wants marine plywood. If you do not need the stiffness, 18 mm is a quarter lighter and a good deal cheaper. The rest of the thicknesses are on the hardwood faced plywood page, with the other grades on the plywood page.
