9 mm okoume marine plywood is where the board stops being a lining and starts being something you can build from. It is the first thickness in the okoume range that will hold a screw properly, while still being light enough to lift one handed.
Lockers, cupboards and light furniture in boats and campers are the usual work: at 9 mm you can make a box with rebated corners, screw a hinge to it and hang a door, which you cannot sensibly do with the lining thicknesses. It is also the usual choice for a van floor laid over an existing subfloor, or a raised platform under a bed, where the board is supported all over and only has to spread the load rather than span. In a building it suits shelving in a utility or garage and small cupboards in a bathroom.
Cutting and handling
Still a comfortable one person board at 13.2 kg. Okoume is soft, so cut with a fine toothed blade and support the sheet close to the line. Keep the faces off grit while you work, because a soft board picks up a scuff from anything sharp on the bench.
Fixing and painting
Pilot any screw going into an edge, and pilot it properly: okoume is a soft hardwood, so the edge grips well enough for light work but splits more readily than a denser board if you drive a screw in dry. Countersink rather than letting a screw head pull itself into the face, or it will sink in and leave a dished mark that shows on a locker front every time the light catches it. Seal every edge and hole before assembly, because the inside faces of a box are impossible to reach afterwards.
Where not to use it
It is light rather than tough, so a surface that will be walked on or take trolleys wants a denser board such as the hardwood marine sheet. For a carcass carrying real weight go up to 12 mm. The full okoume range is listed on the marine plywood page, with the other grades on the plywood page.
