Hard-wearing Far Eastern hardwood throughout; strong, stable, and built for working loads
Less prone to bending and twisting than softer plywood; predictable on site
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio; versatile and easy to handle
Suits flooring, beams, roofing, formwork, soffit, fascia and hoarding
Tougher face veneers blunt blades faster; use a sharp TCT blade with high tooth count
For boat-building or sustained wet exposure, specify Marine Plywood instead

12 mm Malaysian plywood is the general purpose thickness in the range, and the one to use where a floor or a shelf has to span between supports rather than sit on something solid.
Shed and workshop floors over closely spaced joists is the main job, because at 12 mm a dense hardwood board takes foot traffic and a bench without flexing, in a building where the floor is usually the part that gives up first. Garage shelving carrying tins, tools and boxes comes next, along with van floors where the board has to bridge gaps in the deck, the substrate under a laminate or tiled worktop, and platform bases in a loft or store.
Cutting and handling
At 21.4 kg one person can manage a sheet and two can carry it up a ladder safely. Use a carbide blade and wear a mask when cutting, because tropical hardwood dust is more of an irritant than softwood dust and a shed makes a lot of it. Keep the sheets off a concrete floor while they wait, because concrete wicks damp straight into the bottom board of a stack and it will bow.
Fixing and painting
Set out so that every sheet edge lands on a joist, and stagger the joints rather than running them in a line across the floor, since an unsupported edge flexes underfoot and eventually breaks down along that line. Leave a small gap at the walls: the board takes up and gives off moisture with the seasons, and a floor laid tight has nowhere to expand except upwards. Pilot edge screws rather than driving them dry, since a dense edge splits along a glue line.
Where not to use it
If the floor will get wet regularly rather than occasionally, this is not the board. Class 2 bonding copes with humidity, not standing water, and a shed floor that puddles wants marine plywood. If the floor is carrying real weight, or the joists are widely spaced, go up to 18 mm rather than doubling up on this. There is more on the range on the Malaysian hardwood plywood page and the plywood page.
