6 mm Malaysian plywood is a lining board with a harder face than the cheaper sheets of the same thickness. It is hardwood right through rather than a hardwood skin over a soft core, so it takes a knock without denting.
Van and horsebox wall linings are the job it gets bought for most. The inside of a working van gets scraped by everything that goes in and out of it, and a soft faced board looks wrecked within a year where this one does not. It also suits boxing in somewhere that gets knocked, such as a hallway or utility room, backing boards behind shelving, and the lining inside a shed or workshop where tools lean against the wall. It spans between battens at normal spacings without dishing, so it does not need a solid backing behind it.
Cutting and handling
An easy one person board at 10.7 kg, but hard on blades: tropical hardwood blunts a saw faster than softwood or poplar, so fit a decent tungsten carbide blade and accept it will need replacing sooner. It splinters on the underside more than a birch board does, so put a scrap board beneath the cut and score the line on any edge that will be seen. Wear a mask, because tropical hardwood dust irritates more than softwood dust and a closed up van or shed is the worst place to make a lot of it.
Fixing and painting
Fix through the face into the frame behind. At 6 mm there is not enough edge to screw into reliably. If the lining is going to be painted or carpeted, do it before the panels go in: reaching the back of a fitted lining is impossible, and the back is the face that sees the condensation.
Where not to use it
The bonding copes with humidity, not standing water, so anything that gets genuinely wet wants marine plywood. At 6 mm it is a lining rather than a structure, so anything carrying weight starts at 9 mm.
