19 mm Querkus Allegro is a real oak veneered panel by Decospan, giving you the rhythm of narrow oak planking across a full sheet, with none of the movement, waste or fixing time that solid boards bring with them.
Allegro is jointed from a mix of quarter cut and crown cut oak using Decospan’s mixmatch technique, so the grain never repeats or mirrors the way a cheap veneer does. Quarter cut brings tight, straight, linear grain with the occasional ray fleck; crown cut brings the broad cathedral arches. Together they read as a run of narrow planks. That is the practical difference from Adagio, which lays up three wide boards for a calm face: Allegro puts more and narrower boards across the same sheet, so the figure is busier and spread evenly, and no single arch dominates the middle of a panel.
Cutting and handling
It is a long, heavy sheet and needs two people and a clear route in. Keep the good face upwards when cutting, score the line first, and never drag the panel across anything, because a scratch through the veneer cannot be sanded out. The panel is built to stay flat, with two layers of veneer pressed to an 18 mm MDF core, the second acting as a balancer.
Fixing and painting
Go gently with the sander and stop before you think you need to, because there is no recovering a veneer once you are through it. Finish it as you would solid oak and test on an offcut, because the same oil looks different from one sheet to the next. With a narrow plank face it is worth checking the finish across a joint as well as along a board. Lip the edges in solid oak, or tape them.
Where not to use it
It is an interior board on an MDF core, so keep it away from bathrooms and wet areas. On a tall elevation Allegro carries the eye further than a wide figure does, but if you want the calmer face, Adagio is on the same page. The rest of the range is on the MDF page.
