Sauna Glass Door + Alder Door Frame
The door is the one part of a sauna that’s opened, closed, leaned on and looked at every single session, so it’s the part most likely to let a build down — and this one is engineered specifically so it won’t. You get 8 mm tempered safety glass that shrugs off the heat-and-humidity cycle, hung in a glued-alder frame built not to move, with handle and hinges included so it arrives as a complete, ready-to-fit unit. It’s FSC-certified and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why Alder?
The frame is the part that has to stay true, and that’s exactly where alder (Alnus glutinosa) earns its place. The box is made from glued (laminated) alder rather than solid timber, which is the insider detail that matters: laminating balances the wood’s internal stresses so that, even in the constant humidity of a steam room, the frame doesn’t bow, twist or drop out of square the way a solid softwood jamb eventually would.
It looks the part too. The front of the box is faced with a 3 mm lamella that gives the visual weight of a solid alder beam, so the doorway reads as a deliberate, high-end frame — and ties straight into alder cladding and benching for a room that matches end to end.
Installation guidance
Fitting is more forgiving than most sauna hardware because the door is universal — it can be hung to open left-to-right or right-to-left, so you set the handing on site to suit your room rather than ordering a specific side. There’s no raised threshold either, which means no awkward sill to build around and better air circulation across the floor of the steam room.
Set the frame plumb and square in the opening and pack it evenly before fixing, so the glass sits true and the latch meets its keep cleanly. The adjustable latch locates into a groove in the wooden handle, letting you fine-tune for a tight, rattle-free close without any metal contacting the glass edge.
Finishing & maintenance
The glass itself is maintenance-free, so the only decision is the alder frame, and there’s no wrong answer. The natural route is to leave the frame bare so it ages in step with untreated cladding; the preserved route is to wipe it with a dedicated paraffin-based sauna oil so it keeps its tone and stays easy to clean — most customers simply match the frame to whatever they’ve done with the surrounding timber. Never use ordinary varnish or lacquer on the frame, and keep ammonia or solvent-based glass cleaners away from the timber, as both seal or stain the wood and can release fumes when the room heats. Clean the glass with a damp cloth or a little vinegar-and-water, wipe the frame with mild soap, and let the door stand open to ventilate so everything dries fully between uses.
