Saunawood Protection Wax
The walls and ceiling of a steam room take a relentless soaking session after session, and bare timber left to fend for itself is exactly where grime settles and mould eventually takes hold. Saunawood Protection Wax is made to stop that before it starts — a tinted, water-based protective coating that seals sauna walls and ceilings against moisture and dirt while actively resisting mould. One 2.7 L tin covers a typical steam room, and it’s stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why a sauna-specific finish?
Ordinary varnishes and wood stains have no business in a steam room — they aren’t built for sustained heat and humidity, and they’ll cloud, peel or release fumes once the room warms. This coating is formulated specifically for damp rooms instead: it helps the timber shed water and dirt rather than absorb them, carries anti-mould agents for the ceiling and corners where condensation lingers, and works just as well on fibreboard and concrete as it does on wood.
One thing worth knowing up front — it’s for walls and ceilings only, not for sauna benches. A bench needs a paraffin-based oil that won’t form a film, because any sealing coat grows uncomfortably hot against bare skin. If you’re finishing benches too, ask us for the correct bench oil rather than using this.
Installation guidance
Application is a straightforward brush job with no specialist kit required. Work on a surface that’s clean and dry, with the room at least +5°C and relative humidity under 80%, and stir the tin well before you start and again as you go so the tint stays even across the wall.
For steam-room walls, a single coat is enough; or apply two coats thinned with around 50% water if you’d rather soften any brush marks. Always test the tinted product on an offcut or hidden area first, since the final shade depends on the timber beneath and dries slightly lighter and more transparent than the colour chart suggests. When you’re finished, heat and ventilate the sauna thoroughly before its first proper use.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options here, and neither is wrong. Left untinted, the coating protects the boards while keeping the wood’s natural tone; applied tinted, it adds warmth and helps even out colour variation across the cladding — most of our customers go tinted on the walls for a more uniform, finished look. Whichever you choose, never use it on benches, and never brush it over a dirty or still-warm surface. To refresh it down the line, wash the walls first with a dedicated sauna detergent such as Supi Saunapesu, rinse and let dry, then recoat — and keep the room well ventilated so everything dries fully between uses.
