11 mm OSB 3 is the thickness most people reach for when they are sheathing a wall or decking a roof. It is a load bearing board rated for humid conditions, so it copes with being rained on during a build.
It is made from large wood strands laid in oriented layers and pressed with resin, rather than from a veneer or a fibre. There are no knots and no voids anywhere in it, and the practical result is that a fixing behaves the same wherever you put it. On a plywood sheet you can land a screw over a void and never know until it pulls out; here you cannot.
Cutting and handling
At 19.6 kg it is an easy one person sheet, which is most of why it gets used for roofs. Cut it with a sharp blade and plenty of teeth: the strands tear rather than chip, and a blunt blade leaves a furry edge that looks rough under a joint. Expect it to blunt a blade faster than softwood, because the resin content is high. Wear a mask, because the dust is coarse and there is a lot of it.
Fixing and painting
Nail or screw anywhere on the face. Keep fixings about 10 mm in from an edge, because the strands at a cut edge have less to hold on to than the middle of the board does. Stagger the sheet joints rather than lining them up, and land every edge on a rafter or stud.
The face is not a finish and is not meant to be one. If it is going to be seen, seal it, because bare OSB picks up dirt in the open grain and never comes clean again.
Where not to use it
It is rated for humid conditions, not wet ones. Keep it off the ground, get it covered promptly, and do not leave it exposed over a winter.
