Sustainably sourced and FSC certified; no added formaldehyde, compliant with CARB 93120 Phase 2 and NAF
Workability of standard MDF in a panel rated for exterior and wet-interior use
Cut edges should be sealed with an exterior primer or edge sealer to maintain the warranted performance
Outdoor fixings should be stainless or hot-dip galvanised to match the panel's service life

12 mm Tricoya is the general purpose thickness in the range, stiff enough to panel an elevation or to build wet area joinery from without a frame behind every square metre.
It is made from acetylated wood fibres, which is a chemical modification that stops the wood taking up water the way untreated fibre does. That removes most of the swelling and shrinking that finishes off ordinary MDF in a damp place. The board carries a 50 year warranty above ground and 25 years in ground contact, resists fungal decay, and is FSC certified with no added formaldehyde.
Cutting and handling
It machines like MDF, which is the whole reason to choose it over a plywood: you get crisp routed profiles and a face that paints without grain filling, on a board that will survive outside. At 25 kg a full sheet is still a one person lift, so you can get it home and cut it without help. Use a fine toothed blade, support the sheet across the cut, and work with extraction or outdoors in a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Pilot near edges and use stainless or coated fixings on anything exterior. The coating is where you see the benefit most: because the substrate is not moving with humidity, paint and stain last significantly longer than they would on standard MDF, and damage to the coating does not affect the panel warranty.
Seal the cut edges as you would on any board going outdoors, and do the back as well as the front on a panel fixed flat against a wall. The back is the face you will never get at again once it is up, and it is the side that sees the damp air trapped behind the panel.
Where not to use it
Indoors and dry, this is money spent on performance you will not use, and standard MDF does the same job for far less. For a structural exterior component such as a door or a gate, go up to the thicker board. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Tricoya MDF page, and the other grades on the MDF page.
