18 mm Tricoya is the structural thickness in the range, the one for exterior doors, gates, window boards and anything outdoors that has to hold its shape and carry hardware.
The board is made from acetylated wood fibres, chemically modified so they do not absorb water the way untreated fibre does. The swelling and shrinking that ruins ordinary MDF outside is largely engineered out, which is what makes an MDF door leaf a sensible idea rather than a short lived one. It carries a 50 year warranty above ground and 25 years in ground contact, resists fungal decay, and is FSC certified with no added formaldehyde.
Cutting and handling
At 37.5 kg a sheet is a two person lift. It machines like MDF, so routed profiles come out crisp and the face takes paint without grain filling, which is exactly why it gets specified for doors over a plywood. Use a fine toothed blade, support the sheet along the cut, and always work with extraction or outdoors wearing a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
At 18 mm the edge holds a hinge screw properly, though you should still pilot every fixing near an edge. Use stainless or coated hardware outdoors. Paint and stain last far longer on this board than on ordinary MDF because the substrate beneath them is stable, and damage to the coating does not void the panel warranty.
Seal every cut edge and every hole before assembly, particularly the bottom edge of a door, which is the part that sees standing water. It takes ten minutes with a brush and it is the difference between a door that lasts and one that swells at the bottom in its first wet winter.
Where not to use it
Do not use it in permanent ground contact beyond what the warranty covers, and do not buy it for dry interior work where standard MDF will do. If you need a longer sheet, the 3050 mm board saves a joint. The range is on the Tricoya MDF page, and the other grades of board on the MDF page.
