Flexible Plywood Long Grain
When you need plywood that bends to your design rather than fighting it, 5mm flexible long grain ply is the specifier’s quiet secret. Built for curved walls, columns, bar fronts, retail joinery and theatre sets, this is the sheet that turns radius drawings into reality without steaming, kerfing or laminating from scratch. Stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland, our 2440 x 1220mm sheets give you the standard 8′ x 4′ working size with the grain running down the long edge — the configuration most fit-out joiners reach for when wrapping wider curves and full-height feature walls.
Why Flexible Plywood?
Flexible ply, sometimes called bendy ply or wacky ply, is engineered from tropical hardwood veneers (typically Ceiba pentandra or similar lightweight species) laid up so the grain of all plies runs in the same direction. That single design decision is what unlocks the flex — without cross-banded plies locking the sheet rigid, you can wrap it around tight radii by hand and fix it in place.
The long grain version you’re looking at here bends across the 1220mm width, making it the right choice for curved feature walls, sweeping reception desks and any application where the longer edge needs to stay straight while the shorter edge wraps. If your project calls for bending across the 2440mm length instead — typically for cylindrical columns or tight vertical curves — ask us about cross grain. We stock both and it’s a common mix-up worth getting right at the order stage.
Installation guidance
Working with flexible ply is genuinely forgiving, which is part of why fit-out trades love it. For tight radii, most installers laminate two or three layers together with PVA wood adhesive around a former, clamping until cured — this locks the curve in permanently and gives you a rigid finished panel. For gentler curves, a single sheet fixed directly to a curved substrate with adhesive and pins is usually enough.
A few practical notes worth knowing: the face veneer is decorative-grade but thin, so handle sheets on edge to avoid creasing, and pre-drill if you’re fixing close to an edge. The minimum bend radius depends on how many laminations you use, but a single 5mm sheet will comfortably wrap to around 150–200mm radius cold. Cut with a sharp fine-tooth blade to avoid splintering the face.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options with flexible ply, and the right one depends on what’s going on top. The overlay route — bonding a decorative veneer, laminate, or thin timber facing over the curved ply once it’s fixed — is what most of our customers choose, because flexible ply is designed as a substrate rather than a finished surface. The direct-finish route — sealing, priming and painting the ply itself — works well for painted joinery and theatre work where a perfect veneer face isn’t critical. Avoid heavy oil-based stains that can lift the thin face veneer; water-based primers and acrylic paints behave far better. Whichever route you take, keep the finished surface dust-free with a soft cloth and avoid wet cleaning — flexible ply is an interior product and doesn’t appreciate moisture.
