Red Valchromat is coloured through rather than coated, so a mitre or a chamfer is the same red as the face.
It is a deep oxide red with the fibre showing through it, not a bright pillar box red, and it gets deeper again under oil. Most people use it as an accent rather than a whole room: the inside of a cabinet, a run of drawer fronts, a reception desk, a shop fitting. Used that way the through colour is the point, because every routed pull and every exposed edge stays red instead of flashing a pale core the first time someone opens a door.
Cutting and handling
Forty eight kilos to a sheet, so two people. The board is dense and cuts very cleanly with a sharp fine toothed blade, which is worth the extra blade cost when the cut edge is going to be on display rather than hidden under tape. Extraction and a P2 or P3 mask as always, and keep the red dust well away from anything pale, because it is the one colour here that stains a grout line.
Fixing and painting
Unoiled this looks like dry terracotta. Oil takes it from that to a deep saturated red, and it is by some distance the biggest colour change in the range, so never sign off a red scheme from a bare offcut. Use a clear hardwax oil, two coats, faces and edges at the same time. The density holds a screw firmly, but pilot near any edge so you do not split a face off.
Where not to use it
Moisture resistant, not waterproof, so keep it away from showers and standing water. As a large area it is a lot to live with, and a whole kitchen in it is a decision that is expensive to reverse.
