Coloured all the way through; cuts, routed profiles and drilled holes stay the same colour as the face
Classified MDF.HLS per EN 622-5; high-density, moisture-resistant, suitable for structural use in humid environments
Higher density and stronger internal cohesion than standard MDF; machines cleanly with less tool wear
Made in Portugal; design material that reads as natural wood rather than as coated MDF
Natural colour variation between sheets and within sheets; lay panels out before installation to minimise visible difference
Surface needs a finish (varnish, wax or oil) to protect the colour and the texture in service

Orange Valchromat has the colour running right through the board instead of sitting on top of it.
The shade is a burnt, earthy orange rather than a signage orange, and the visible fibre keeps it from looking like a plastic laminate. It is a shopfitting and display colour more than a domestic one: counters, plinths, shelving in a retail unit, an exhibition stand, a signage panel that gets handled. For that kind of work the through colour pays for itself straight away, because display joinery gets knocked constantly and a chipped edge on a painted panel is white.
Cutting and handling
Two people to a sheet. It is harder than standard MDF and cuts crisply for it, which is why exposed edges on this board can simply be sanded and oiled rather than lipped. Blades dull faster, so have a spare. Cut with extraction or outdoors in a P2 or P3 mask, and sweep up as you go, because tinted dust trodden through a finished shop unit is a bad afternoon.
Fixing and painting
The bare board looks chalky and muted, several shades off where it ends up. A clear hardwax oil brings out the saturation, and two coats is the minimum on anything the public will touch. Finish edges and faces together so a plinth does not end up lighter along its top. Screws hold well in the density, and for shop work that gets dismantled and rebuilt, that matters: pilot near edges and it will take being unscrewed more than once.
Where not to use it
It is moisture resistant rather than waterproof, so it is not a board for an outdoor stand or a wet area. In daylight over a large area it is a strong colour, so use it in runs and panels rather than everywhere. Yellow is brighter again and red deeper. All eleven colours are listed on the coloured MDF page, with the rest of the range on the MDF page.
