Higher density and stronger internal cohesion than standard MDF; machines cleanly with less tool wear

Yellow Valchromat is dyed through its full thickness, so a cut edge shows the same yellow as the face.
It is a mustard yellow with the fibre visible in it, warmer and dirtier than a primary yellow, which is what keeps it usable indoors. The thing to know before you order is that yellow throws colour onto whatever is beside it. A yellow panel next to a white wall puts a faint wash on that wall in daylight, and inside a cabinet it tints everything on the shelves. Used deliberately that is a lovely effect; discovered afterwards it is annoying.
Cutting and handling
It takes two people at 48 kg. The board is dense and gives a very clean cut, so a sawn edge on this colour can go straight to sanding and oiling with no lipping at all. Keep a sharp blade in the saw and a spare on the bench, because the density that gives you the clean edge is also what takes the teeth off. Extraction, or work outdoors, and wear a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Straight from the sheet it looks pale and a bit dusty. Oil deepens it towards proper mustard and evens out the surface, so judge the colour oiled and never bare. Test on an offcut, since a hardwax oil with any amber in it will push this further towards ochre. Two coats, edges done with the faces, and give a worktop or a shelf front a third. Screws bite well in a board this dense; pilot near edges all the same, since a fixing too close to a corner will lift a chip that is the full colour and very obvious.
Where not to use it
Humidity is fine, standing water is not, so keep it out of wet rooms. It is also the colour in the range that fades most visibly in strong direct sunlight, so think carefully about a south facing window seat or a shopfront panel. For something calmer in the warm end, khaki and orange are worth a look. The full palette sits on the coloured MDF page, and the other boards on the MDF page.
