Coloured all the way through; cuts, routed profiles and drilled holes stay the same colour as the face
Classified MDF.HLS per EN 622-5; high-density, moisture-resistant, suitable for structural use in humid environments
Higher density and stronger internal cohesion than standard MDF; machines cleanly with less tool wear
Made in Portugal; design material that reads as natural wood rather than as coated MDF
Natural colour variation between sheets and within sheets; lay panels out before installation to minimise visible difference
Surface needs a finish (varnish, wax or oil) to protect the colour and the texture in service

Chocolate Valchromat is dyed right through, so the edge matches the face wherever you cut it.
It is the one people choose when they wanted dark stained timber and did not want the trouble that comes with it. A stain on real wood lands unevenly, blotches on end grain and never quite repeats from board to board; this arrives the same brown throughout and stays that way. Under oil it goes deep and warm, closer to walnut than to a painted brown, and it keeps enough fibre texture to read as timber rather than plastic.
Cutting and handling
A two person sheet at 48 kg. The density gives you clean cuts and sharp machined detail, which matters here because chocolate is a colour people use for routed drawer pulls and chamfered edges where the inside of the profile is on show. Keep the blade sharp; this board goes through them faster than standard MDF, and a tired blade leaves a burnished line that shows badly on a dark colour. Work with extraction and a proper mask.
Fixing and painting
Raw it looks dusty and a good deal lighter than you are expecting. Oil is not optional on this colour if you want the depth, and the jump from bare to finished is bigger than on any of the greys. Use a clear hardwax oil rather than a tinted one and give it two coats, edges included, since a tinted finish over a colour this dark just muddies it. Pilot fixings near edges, though in a board this dense screws hold better than in ordinary MDF.
Where not to use it
Damp resistant, not waterproof: keep it out of showers and off surfaces that stay wet. Dark browns also swallow light, so in a small room with one window it will feel heavier than a sample suggests. If you want the warmth without the weight, look at khaki. The rest of the colours are on the coloured MDF page and the other boards on the MDF page.
