Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

4 mm birch plywood is the thinnest sheet we carry, and it is what most people use for drawer bottoms, cabinet backs and panels that sit inside a frame. It is three layers of solid birch glued together, with no chipboard or softwood filler in the middle.
Drawer bottoms are the most common job. A 4 mm birch base holds a drawer full of tools or crockery without bowing in the middle, where thin hardboard tends to sag, because the three layers are glued with the grain running in alternate directions and the sheet is stiff across its width as well as along its length. Cabinet and wardrobe backs are next: screw the back on all the way round rather than just pinning it and it stops the whole unit twisting out of square, which makes a real difference on anything tall. It also works well for templates and jigs, being flat, hard enough to guide a router bearing without wearing away, and cheap enough to remake for the next job.
Cutting and handling
At 8.1 kg you can carry it, get it into a car and cut it on your own; the thicker boards in the range need two people. Thin plywood chips along the cut if you rush it, so use a blade with plenty of teeth, keep the good face upwards, and put a scrap board underneath so the bottom layer has something to break out into. Scoring the line first with a sharp knife helps.
Fixing and painting
Fix it with pins and glue rather than screws, because at 4 mm there is not enough thickness for a screw head to pull against. It will also bend to a gentle curve straight off the sheet, so you can glue and pin it around a former for a curved cabinet end or a bath panel with no need to soak or steam it first.
Where not to use it
Birch is an interior board, so anywhere damp wants marine plywood instead. At 4 mm it will not span or carry either: it needs a frame or a groove around it. Where the panel is doing structural work, start at 6 mm. The rest of the range, and help choosing a thickness, is on the birch plywood page and the plywood page.
