Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

18 mm birch plywood is the board to default to for cabinets, and the reason is hardware rather than strength. Almost every cabinet fitting you can buy is sized around an 18 mm board, so things simply go together.
A concealed hinge needs a 35 mm hole bored into the door with material left behind it, and a plate screwed to a side that can hold it while the door swings thousands of times. The long assembly screws used at cabinet corners run to full depth into the edge without bursting out through a face. Shelf pin holes drilled at the usual 32 mm spacing leave material on both sides rather than sitting right on the edge of the board. None of that is dramatic on its own, but together it is the difference between a cabinet you can build with ordinary fittings from a catalogue and one where every fixing needs thinking about. The birch part matters as much as the 18: thirteen solid layers mean the edge has no gaps in it, so a screw bites into real material the whole way down.
Cutting and handling
Two people can lift a sheet comfortably; one person will struggle. Cut it good face upwards with a fine toothed blade, and score the line first where the edge will show.
Fixing and painting
Pilot screws going into the edge even at this thickness. Birch grips better than almost any other board, but a screw driven in dry can still open a glue line, and you will not see it until the joint moves. If you are leaving the edge bare, sand it up through the grits and finish it at the same time as the face, because thirteen layers of exposed end grain drink oil far faster than the flat face does.
Where not to use it
It is an interior board, so kitchens and bathrooms that see standing water want marine plywood. For a run of deep units, the 1550×3050 mm sheet rips to two pieces over 760 mm and wastes nothing. To compare it against the other thicknesses, they are all on the birch plywood page and the plywood page.
