5.5 mm hardwood plywood is the thin, cheap sheet for covering things, and the easiest board in the range to handle on your own. It is a poplar core with a hardwood face.
Covering a surface neatly is the whole job: cabinet and wardrobe backs, drawer bottoms in a dry room, infill panels inside a frame, and the back of a shelving unit that just needs closing in. It is also the usual choice for protecting something temporarily, because a sheet laid over a finished floor while the rest of a job goes on costs very little and saves a lot of arguments.
Cutting and handling
At 8.7 kg it fits in most cars and one person can cut it. The face veneer is thin and the core is soft, so it chips and dents easily. Use a fine toothed blade, keep the good face upwards, and put a scrap board underneath so the bottom face has something to break out into. Expect the odd small gap in the inner layer when you cut it; that is normal on a poplar core board and only matters if you were relying on the edge.
Fixing and painting
Fix it with pins, staples or screws through the face. At 5.5 mm there is nothing to screw into on the edge, and a screw head will pull straight through if you overtighten it. If you are painting, seal the face first with a thinned coat of primer, then prime and paint properly, because bare plywood soaks up the first coat unevenly and the finish ends up patchy.
Where not to use it
It will not span or carry, so it needs continuous support or a frame behind it. If the board has to bridge a gap or take any weight, start at 9 mm. It is an interior board as well, so anything damp or outdoors wants marine plywood instead. The rest of the range is on the hardwood faced plywood page, and the other grades on the plywood page.
