9 mm hardwood plywood is the first thickness in the range that holds its own shape between fixings. That is what makes it the board for boxing in and for panelling fixed to a frame.
Boxing in is the main job: pipework, a boiler, a soil stack, the underside of a staircase. Fixed to a light timber frame at normal spacings a 9 mm sheet stays flat between the battens rather than dishing in, which is what makes the finished box look built rather than tacked together. It also suits shed and garage linings, stud infill panels, the back of a deep cupboard, and shelving supported along its whole length.
Cutting and handling
At 14.2 kg it is comfortably a one person board. Cut it good face upwards with a fine toothed blade, because the hardwood face chips if you rush and the poplar underneath tears if the blade is coarse. Keep the sheets flat while they wait: a thin poplar core board left leaning against a wall for a fortnight takes a bow, and a bowed panel will not sit tight to a frame.
Fixing and painting
You can screw into the face freely. Screwing into the edge is possible but not reliable on a poplar core, because the screw may land in a soft layer or a small void, so where an edge fixing has to hold use a longer screw through the framing behind instead. Fill and sand the edges before painting: a bare plywood edge takes primer unevenly and always ends up a different sheen to the face beside it, and on boxing in that edge is usually right at eye level.
Where not to use it
It is a dry interior board, so use marine plywood anywhere it will get wet. It is also a lining rather than a structure: if the panel is carrying weight or spanning between supports, go to 12 mm or above. The full range is on the hardwood faced plywood page, with the other grades on the plywood page.
