18 mm hardwood plywood is the thickness for anything carrying real weight that will be covered or painted rather than admired. Workbench tops and storage platforms are the usual choice.
At 18 mm the board will take a vice bolted through it and the general abuse a bench gets, and if the top does eventually get chewed up it is cheap enough to replace without much thought. Storage platforms and heavy loft boarding, shelving with longer spans between supports, the base of a fitted cupboard and panels that will be boarded or tiled over all sit here.
Cutting and handling
At 28.4 kg two people make it easy and one person will manage with some effort. That is eight kilos lighter than birch of the same size, which is worth knowing if a dozen sheets are going up a loft ladder. Cut good face upwards with a sharp, fine toothed blade; it is thick enough that a blunt blade will bog down and burn the edge. Support the sheet across the cut rather than at its ends.
Fixing and painting
Screw through the face rather than into the edge wherever you can. An 18 mm poplar core edge holds better than the thinner boards but still nothing like as well as a solid hardwood board, so for a bench top that is coming apart and going back together, bolt through rather than screwing in. If the bench or shelf is going in a garage or shed, seal both faces rather than just the top, because a board sealed on one side takes up moisture on the other and cups away from the dry face.
Where not to use it
