Chinese Poplar Core Hardwood Plywood Sheet
Chinese poplar core hardwood plywood is the value-tier structural panel that lets you cover larger areas without stretching the project budget. With a clean hardwood B-grade face over a poplar core, it’s lighter than full hardwood ply but still rated for permanent structural work. We stock it in our yard in Dublin, ready for fast delivery anywhere in Ireland.
Why poplar core hardwood plywood?
The panel is built from a eucalyptus or mixed red hardwood face veneer over a eucalyptus and poplar core. The combination gives you a hardwood-faced panel at a working-grade price, lighter than full hardwood ply and easier to handle solo. At 18 mm, the panel carries the CE2+ system attestation, which means an independent body audits the factory’s quality control rather than relying on the manufacturer’s own paperwork; that’s the level you want behind any structural specification. The face is graded B (a clean working face) and the back is graded BB (a serviceable face with sound knots and tidy plug repairs), which is the standard combination for structural panels with one visible side.
It meets EN 13986:2004, the harmonised European standard for wood-based panels in construction, with bond performance to EN 314-2 Class 2 (suitable for humid interior conditions and short exterior exposure), durability to EN 636-2 (the same humid-conditions class), and surface appearance to EN 635-2. On indoor air quality, it carries the E1 low-formaldehyde classification, the European limit that lets a panel be used safely inside homes, schools and offices. FSC-certified stock is available on request. Used widely for flooring, beams, roofing, formwork, soffit and fascia detail, partitions, furniture frames, and back panels where weight and price both matter.
Working with the sheet
At 18 mm, work the sheet with a sharp TCT blade; a high tooth count gives the cleanest face cuts. Score the face veneer along your cut line with a sharp knife first if you want a chip-free edge, and support the underside fully during the cut. Pre-drill before fixing close to an edge to prevent the face veneer lifting or the core splitting.
Store flat and dry until use. The Class 2 bond and EN 636-2 durability rating both cover humid conditions and limited short-term moisture; for prolonged exposure to weather, boat-building or sustained wet environments, our Marine Plywood range is the right choice instead.
Finishing
For painted finishes, prime the face first because the veneer absorbs unevenly and ordinary paint can patch. Two coats of primer, sanded between, then your topcoat. For natural-look finishes, a clear lacquer or hardwax oil works well and will warm the face up; expect some variation in colour across sheets as the face veneer is a hardwood mix. For exposed cut edges, sand progressively or apply hardwood edge banding for a tidier finish. Ask us if you’re unsure which finish to pair with your project, and we’ll point you to what works.
