Hard-wearing Far Eastern hardwood throughout; strong, stable, and built for working loads
Less prone to bending and twisting than softer plywood; predictable on site
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio; versatile and easy to handle
Suits flooring, beams, roofing, formwork, soffit, fascia and hoarding
Tougher face veneers blunt blades faster; use a sharp TCT blade with high tooth count
For boat-building or sustained wet exposure, specify Marine Plywood instead

9 mm Malaysian plywood is the thickness where the board starts holding a screw properly. It is the usual choice for a van floor laid over whatever is already there.
On a van floor the board is supported all over, so it does not have to span: it only has to spread the load and take the wear, and a dense hardwood board does that better than a soft cored one at the same thickness and weight. It also suits shed and garage linings that will get knocked, shelving supported along its whole length, small partitions, and the base of a storage platform over a solid deck. At 9 mm you can rebate a corner and screw it, so light boxes and lockers are practical here in a way they are not with the thinner sheet.
Cutting and handling
Still comfortable for one person at 16.1 kg. Use a sharp tungsten carbide blade and expect the cut to be harder work than birch, letting the saw set the pace rather than pushing it. Lay it with the better face upwards: both faces are sound, but one is usually tidier, and on a floor that is the one you will be looking at.
Fixing and painting
Pilot any screw going into an edge. The board grips well because the timber is dense, but a dense edge also splits along a glue line if a screw goes in dry. If it is going down as a floor, screw rather than nail it, because nails work loose under foot traffic and start squeaking, and a screwed floor lifts again if you need to get underneath. Seal it if the space gets damp: a van floor taking wet boots every day wants a finish rather than bare timber.
Where not to use it
It is bonded for interior and humid use, not for standing water, so a floor that puddles wants marine plywood. Where the board has to bridge gaps rather than sit on a solid deck, go to 12 mm. The full range is on the Malaysian hardwood plywood page, alongside the rest of the plywood range.
