Hard-wearing Far Eastern hardwood throughout; strong, stable, and built for working loads
Less prone to bending and twisting than softer plywood; predictable on site
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio; versatile and easy to handle
Suits flooring, beams, roofing, formwork, soffit, fascia and hoarding
Tougher face veneers blunt blades faster; use a sharp TCT blade with high tooth count
For boat-building or sustained wet exposure, specify Marine Plywood instead

18 mm Malaysian plywood is the structural thickness in the range. It is the board for a floor or platform that has to carry weight and keep carrying it, and it is denser than a poplar core sheet of the same size.
Shed, workshop and loft floors that will hold more than boxes, storage platforms, workbench tops in a garage, and van and horsebox floors taking trolleys, tools and heavy boots are the regular jobs. It is also the usual board for temporary work that has to survive being walked on and driven over: site hoarding, load spreading boards and floor protection during a build. It sits between the lighter poplar core board and birch, so you pay a few kilos of carrying for a tougher board than the cheap one and save against birch you would never see under a floor.
Cutting and handling
At 32.1 kg it is a two person lift. Use a sharp tungsten carbide blade and cut slowly, because eighteen millimetres of dense tropical hardwood will slow a blade noticeably and burn the edge if you push it. Check the sheets when they arrive: quality varies between mills more than it does with a European board, so look along the faces for bowing and at the cut edges of the stack for gaps in the inner layers before you start building.
Fixing and painting
Screw rather than nail, pilot near edges, and keep fixings a little in from the corners where the outer layers have least to hold. Stagger joints and land every edge on a joist, exactly as with the thinner boards. Seal both faces if it is going somewhere humid, because a board sealed on one side only takes up moisture on the other and cups away from the dry face.
Where not to use it
Thickness does not change the bonding, so anywhere that sees standing water wants marine plywood instead. If the floor is sitting on a solid deck and only has to take wear, 12 mm is a third lighter. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Malaysian hardwood plywood page, with the other grades on the plywood page.
