6 mm okoume marine plywood is the standard lining board for a camper van conversion. It is light, it copes with the damp a van interior generates, and it is stiff enough to span between the ribs without dishing in.
Van and horsebox walls and ceilings are most of it. Fixed to the vehicle’s own ribs at their normal spacing, a 6 mm sheet stays flat between them where a thinner board will not, and that flatness is what stops a lining looking homemade once it is carpeted or painted. It will still take a gentle curve, so it follows the shoulder of a van roof where the panel has to turn without being cut and jointed. In a building it suits bathroom and utility linings, the panel inside a bath frame, and shower ceilings.
Cutting and handling
One person handles it comfortably at 8.8 kg, and the long sheet is genuinely useful in a van, where you can often line a whole wall in one piece and avoid a joint. Cut it with a fine toothed blade and support it near the line, because okoume is soft and tears rather than chips if the blade is coarse or blunt.
Fixing and painting
Fix through the face into the frame behind and do not rely on a screw into the edge at this thickness. Seal it before it goes in, both faces: the back of a van lining is the side that sees condensation, and once the panel is fitted you will never reach it again. A quick coat on the bench beforehand is far easier than trying to protect it in place.
Where not to use it
It is a lining, not a structure, so anything you intend to screw a hinge to or stand on wants 9 mm or thicker. The bonding survives water; the surface still needs a finish, so do not leave it bare outdoors. You can see the other thicknesses on the marine plywood page, alongside the rest of the plywood range.
