7 mm white ash veneered MDF is the thin panelling board, stiff enough to hold itself flat over a frame without adding any real depth to the detail. Real crown cut white ash goes on both faces, so a panel can be seen from either side.
Door skins, framed wall panelling, infill panels and any face that sits inside a moulding are the regular jobs. White ash is the pale one with the loud grain, blonde to almost white, with open pores and crown figure that arrives in strong sweeping bands, so at this thickness it works best where a frame breaks the panel up. A 7 mm sheet drops into a rebate that 12 mm would not, and over a light frame it stays flat between members where 4 mm would show every one of them.
Cutting and handling
At 15.02 kg it is comfortably a one person sheet. Score the face veneer before the cut and use a sharp fine tooth blade, because ash has long open fibres that tear more readily than a close grained timber. Support the panel along the cut line rather than at the ends, since a thin sheet drops into the cut and pinches the blade. Work with extraction and a P2 or P3 mask, change the blade sooner than you think you need to, and keep the sheets stacked flat while they wait, because a thin veneered board left leaning will bow.
Fixing and painting
Fix through the face or bond it to a substrate, because a 7 mm edge will not hold a screw. Iron on veneer edging suits concealed edges, and a thin solid ash lipping is worth the extra work anywhere the edge is handled. Sand to 180 or 240 grit and then leave it alone, because the veneer is thinner than people expect and an orbital sander goes through a corner in seconds. Test any finish on an offcut: the open pores take stain unevenly, and a pigmented oil sits in the grain and gives you either a lovely limed effect or a dirty one depending on the product.
Where not to use it
Dry interiors only, nothing structural, and nothing that has to carry a fixing in its edge. Where the panel will be knocked or take weight, the 19 mm board is the right one. Every thickness and species is listed on the veneered MDF page, alongside the wider MDF range.
