13 mm white ash veneered MDF is the half inch board, the one that goes in where 19 mm is heavier than the job needs and 7 mm has nothing to fix into.
Cabinet backs, drawer sides, light shelving, routed door fronts and framed panelling are the regular work. White ash is blonde to almost white, with an open pore structure and crown figure that arrives in strong sweeping bands, which at this thickness suits drawer fronts and door faces where the grain gets read at close range. It takes a lipping cleanly and it is light enough to handle on your own, which is most of why it earns its place between the two obvious thicknesses.
Cutting and handling
A sheet runs to about 27.8 kg, so one person can manage it and two makes it easy. Score the veneer on the show face before the main cut and use a sharp fine tooth blade, because ash has long open fibres that tear more readily than a close grained timber. Support the offcut, keep the good face upwards, and work with extraction and a P2 or P3 mask. A tired blade leaves a furry edge on ash that a sharp one would not.
Fixing and painting
Pilot drill and use coarse threaded MDF screws. A 13 mm edge will take a screw but it will not forgive a loaded joint, so use dowels, biscuits or a mechanical fitting anywhere the panel carries weight. Lip exposed edges in solid ash before final sanding. Sand to 180 or 240 grit and no further. Test any finish on an offcut, because the open pores take stain unevenly and a pigmented oil sits in the grain, giving you either a limed effect or a dirty one depending on the product.
Where not to use it
It is an MDF core, so dry interiors only and nothing damp. Past about 600 mm a shelf in this thickness wants a lipped front edge or a bearer, and for carcassing proper the 19 mm board is the right one. Every thickness and species is listed on the veneered MDF page, alongside the wider MDF range.
