White ash veneered MDF is a 19 mm board with real crown cut ash on both faces. It is the cabinet thickness, so it does everything the oak board does, in a very different looking timber.
White ash is the pale one with the loud grain. It is blonde to almost white, with an open, coarse pore structure and crown cut figure that arrives in strong, sweeping bands rather than the quieter pattern of oak. In a dark room it lifts everything around it, and in a large unbroken run it can be a lot, so it tends to suit doors, feature panels and shelving better than a whole wall.
Cutting and handling
A two person sheet at 40.66 kg. Score the veneer on the show face before the main cut and use a sharp fine tooth blade, because ash has long open fibres that tear more readily than a close grained timber. Support the offcut, keep the good face upwards, and work with extraction and a P2 or P3 mask. Change the blade sooner than you think you need to, because a tired one leaves a furry edge on ash that a sharp one would not.
Fixing and painting
Pilot drill and use coarse threaded MDF screws, and put dowels or a mechanical fitting into any loaded joint. Lip exposed edges in solid ash before final sanding. Sand to 180 or 240 grit and no further. Test any finish on an offcut: the open pores take stain unevenly and a pigmented oil sits in the grain, which either gives you a lovely limed effect or a dirty one depending on the product.
Where not to use it
It is an MDF core, so dry interiors only and nothing damp. If you want the same pale feel with almost no figure, maple is the quieter board, and white oak sits between the two. Every species and thickness is listed on the veneered MDF page, with the rest of the range on the MDF page.
