19 mm oak veneered MDF, with real crown cut white oak on both faces, is the workhorse of the range and the board most oak faced joinery is built from.
It is substantial enough to build a unit from, hang a door on and take cabinet hardware without compromise, while still being a sheet two people can handle and a saw will cut cleanly in one pass. Shopfitted units, reception desks, internal doors and door blanks, wall panelling, fitted wardrobes and library shelving all land here. If a drawing does not state a thickness, this is the one it assumes.
Cutting and handling
A two person sheet at 40.66 kg, or one person and a panel trolley rather than a hero. Score the veneer along the cut line on the face side before the main pass, then cut with a sharp fine tooth blade and support the offcut so it does not drop away and tear the underside. Cut with extraction or outdoors in a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Pilot drill and use coarse threaded MDF screws; for joints under real load use dowels, biscuits, a domino tenon or a mechanical fitting rather than trusting the fibre to hold a thread. Edge every exposed cut. Solid oak lipping is the right answer on doors and shelf fronts because it can be radiused and refinished; iron on edging is fine on concealed edges. Fit lipping before final sanding and sand to 180 or 240 grit, no further.
Where not to use it
An MDF core is a dry interior material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from anything wet. A shelf will deflect over a long span even at this thickness, so lip the front or add a bearer past about 800 mm.
