12 mm oak veneered MDF is the general purpose thickness in the range, and the one most oak faced panelling and light shelving comes off. It carries real crown cut white oak on both faces, an A grade show side and a B grade back.
Wall panelling, cabinet backs and bottoms, light duty shelving, drawer sides, sliding door panels and display work all sit here, and so do most of the parts of a piece that are seen but not loaded. It is substantial enough to look like a panel rather than a facing, and thin enough that a run of panelling does not eat into the room.
Cutting and handling
At 25.74 kg one person can carry and cut a full sheet. Score the veneer on the show face before the main pass and use a sharp fine tooth blade; the crown cut figure on white oak has long fibres that tear if the blade is coarse. Support the offcut so it does not drop and tear the underside as the cut breaks through. Work with extraction or outdoors, wearing a P2 or P3 mask, and keep the good face upwards throughout.
Fixing and painting
At 12 mm you can pilot and drive a coarse threaded MDF screw into the edge, though anything under load is better on dowels, biscuits or a mechanical fitting. Edge every exposed cut: iron on oak edging on concealed edges, a solid lipping wherever the edge is seen or handled, and fit the lipping before the final sanding so the two sand flush. Sand to 180 or 240 grit and stop there, since there is no recovering a veneer once you are through it.
Where not to use it
It is an MDF core, so keep it dry and out of bathrooms, and it is not a structural board. A shelf at this thickness will deflect over a long span, so lip the front edge or add a bearer past about 800 mm rather than trusting the board. For cabinet work go to 19 mm.
