Tricoya MDF Sheet
Tricoya is a new breed of MDF: a panel durable and stable enough to use outside, with all the workability, machining flexibility and finished surface quality of standard MDF. If you want the design freedom of MDF in an exterior cladding, a window-board, a wet-area joinery panel or a high-humidity environment, this is the panel that makes it possible. At 18 mm, we stock the workhorse exterior thickness for cladding, fascia and deep window-boards in our yard in Dublin, ready for fast delivery anywhere in Ireland.
Why Tricoya MDF?
Tricoya is built from acetylated wood fibres. Acetylation is a process that chemically modifies the wood at the molecular level to dramatically reduce its ability to absorb water; the fibres that go into the panel simply don’t take up moisture the way unmodified wood fibres do, which means the swelling and shrinking that finishes off ordinary MDF in damp conditions is largely engineered out. The result is a panel with the workability of MDF and the dimensional stability of a far more expensive engineered material.
The performance is backed by a 50-year warranty for use above ground and 25 years in ground contact, which is in a different league to anything ordinary MDF can offer. The panel is rated as an effective barrier against fungal decay, and the dimensional stability of the substrate also extends the service life of any coating applied to the face: paint, stain and other finishes last significantly longer because the panel under them isn’t constantly moving with humidity. Damage to the coating doesn’t affect the panel warranty.
On indoor air quality and sustainability, Tricoya is sustainably sourced and FSC certified. The panel contains no added formaldehyde and complies with CARB 93120 Phase 2 and the NAF (No Added Formaldehyde) requirements, which together are the strictest formaldehyde regime for wood-based panels anywhere in the world; this matters wherever a project is being specified for sensitive interior environments or to North American standards.
You’ll see Tricoya specified across exterior cladding, fascia and soffit, window components, external doors and door skins, sun-shading and louvres, signage, wet-area interior joinery, bathroom and shower-room walls, and high-humidity commercial installations where ordinary MDF simply wouldn’t survive.
Working with the sheet
At 18 mm, this is the workhorse Tricoya thickness for exterior cladding, fascia, deep window-boards and structural exterior joinery. Use a sharp TCT blade with 60 or more teeth for clean cross-cuts, pre-drill all fixings, and use stainless or hot-dip galvanised screws appropriate to the panel’s outdoor service life.
MDF dust is fine and should be cut with extraction or outdoors. Wear a P2 or P3 mask. Tricoya can be cut, machined, painted and wrapped without affecting its core performance, but for exterior service, all cut edges should be sealed with a quality exterior primer or edge sealer to keep the panel performing as warranted.
Finishing
Tricoya is built for coating; the dimensional stability of the substrate is exactly what makes finishes last longer on it than they do on ordinary panels. For exterior work, use a quality exterior primer and topcoat (or microporous stain for a more natural look); for interior wet areas, a kitchen and bathroom or moisture-tolerant paint system works well. Avoid skipping the primer step, since although the panel is stable, the open MDF face still benefits from sealing before topcoating for the cleanest finish. Ask us if you’re unsure which finish to pair with your application, and we’ll point you to what works.
