                Timber Handrails

Timber handrails are the rails, spindles and infills that make a safe, finished edge around a deck, a raised patio or an outdoor step. Our range is MicroShades treated softwood with a factory applied finish: a 69×40 mm handrail and 69×32 mm base rail, 41×41×900 mm spindles and a 41×10 mm infill strip. Everything is stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

Timber Handrails for Sale in Ireland

A handrail is the timber that gets touched every day, so it has to be smooth, strong and good looking. Our handrail range is a complete MicroShades system: every part arrives treated and factory finished, so there is no treating or painting on site and the rail looks finished the day it goes up.

Because the parts are designed together, the handrail, base rail, spindles and infill line up with each other and with the matching MicroShades posts.

                  Timber handrail parts and sizes

A typical deck handrail is built from four parts:

                  • The handrail is the top rail you hold, 69×40 mm with softened ease edges for a comfortable grip.
                  • The base rail, 69×32 mm, is the bottom rail that the spindles stand on.
                  • The spindles are the upright balusters between the rails, 41×41×900 mm with an ease edge.
                  • The infill strip, 41×10 mm, is a slim finishing strip in the same factory finish.

The posts that carry the rails are the 69×69 mm MicroShades posts. Choose the rail length on the product page; longer rails mean fewer joints along the deck edge. The calculator on each product page works out how many rails and spindles your run needs, and the cart adds the matching extras.

                  Why choose MicroShades handrails?

MicroShades is treated softwood with a factory applied finish that is more uniform and better bonded than anything brushed on site, and the treatment penetrates deep into the timber. With a service life of 20 years and beyond, it gives you dependable performance without the wait for dry weather to treat and paint. It matches MicroShades decking, so the deck and its rail share one finish.

                  Installing a timber handrail

A handrail is a safety item, so fix it properly:

                  • Fix the rails to the handrail posts at the appropriate centres with stainless steel A2 or A4 hardware. See our timber connectors.
                  • Pre drill every connection, especially near the ends.
                  • Make sure the rail height meets local building regulations, typically a minimum of 900 mm for a domestic deck.
                  • Reseal any cut end with touch up sealer to keep the factory treatment continuous.

                  Timber handrails vs balustrades

If you’d rather an aluminium edge, see our PuraFence decking balustrades, including a stair railing kit. Timber rails suit a natural garden deck, and they can be cut and fitted on site with ordinary tools.

                  Looking after timber handrails

MicroShades handrails need no treatment on site, but the finish keeps its colour depth and protection best with a refresh coat every two or three years, especially on the top rail that is handled most. Our exterior wood oils include finishes for refreshing the surface.
