8 mm flexible plywood long grain is the thicker bendy ply, for gentler curves and bigger panels. It will not come round as tight as the 5 mm sheet, but it is considerably stiffer once it is fixed.
There are two reasons to go up to 8 mm. The first is a large panel: a big curved face in 5 mm needs support every few inches or it ripples, where this board holds a fair line between more widely spaced ribs. The second is where the curve is gentle, because on a long sweeping radius the thinner board gives you nothing useful, the limit being not how far it will bend but how well it holds its shape afterwards. Large curved wall panels and radius walls, big column and pillar casings, curved reception fronts, sweeping bulkheads and curved ceiling details are the usual work.
Cutting and handling
Support the sheet fully when cutting and use a fine toothed blade, because it is stiffer than the 5 mm board but still sags enough to spoil a cut if it is only held at the ends. Store and carry it flat: even at 8 mm a sheet left standing on edge will take a kink at the floor.
Fixing and painting
Fix it to ribs more often than feels necessary. Flats between the supports show up badly on a curve once it is painted or veneered, because a curved surface catches light along its whole length. Fill and prime before the piece goes up where you can, since a fixed curved panel is awkward to work on afterwards.
Where not to use it
If your curve is tight, use the 5 mm long grain sheet instead, or laminate two layers of it. This is the long grain version and it bends in the opposite direction to the cross grain board, so work out which dimension of your sheet has to wrap around the curve before ordering, because the wrong one cannot be used. Ring us with the radius if you are unsure. Both thicknesses and both directions are set out on the flexible plywood page and the plywood page.
