            Douglas Fir Boards

Douglas Fir boards are wide, square edged softwood boards with a warm reddish pink tone, a straight grain and a strong knot pattern. The board is 200×20 mm, a size that suits cladding, feature framing and structural joinery where the timber is on show. Douglas Fir is one of the strongest softwoods we sell, and the board is stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

Douglas Fir Boards for Sale in Ireland

Douglas Fir is the softwood people choose when a project needs strength and character in the same piece of timber. It is used around the world for exposed beams, posts, joists and feature work, and our Douglas Fir board brings that look to wide, flat work: a run of cladding, a fascia, a feature frame or a piece of outdoor joinery.

The warm reddish pink colour sets it apart from pine and spruce, and it deepens with age. Natural resin in the timber adds weather resistance and gives the board its tone.

              Douglas Fir board size

We stock one size, chosen because it covers the widest range of jobs: a 200×20 mm square edge board, wide and slim with plain square edges. The 200 mm face covers ground quickly on cladding and feature panels. Choose the length on the product page; longer boards mean fewer joints on long walls and fascias. The calculator there works out how many boards your wall or frame needs.

              Why choose Douglas Fir?

With a density of around 530 kg/m³ and an excellent strength to weight ratio, Douglas Fir is the softwood structural engineers reach for when timber has to do real work and look good doing it. It is Durability Class 3, which means a service life of 15 to 25 years in exterior use when properly detailed. That puts it well ahead of ordinary softwood for outdoor joinery, while staying light enough to cut and fix by hand.

Douglas Fir vs other timber boards

If you need a harder wearing board for a bench top or a heavy rail, our planed oak boards are denser and Durability Class 2. For a hardwood deck or facade, Yellow Balau boards are Durability Class 1. The Ecowood board is a thicker 45 mm softwood with a honey tone. For a profiled facade in the same species, see Douglas Fir cladding, and for the structure behind it, Douglas Fir joists and Douglas Fir beams and posts.

              Fixing Douglas Fir boards

Douglas Fir is easy to work, but a few habits keep it looking right:

              • Pre drill near the board ends to stop the timber splitting.
              • Use stainless steel fixings outdoors so the resin and weather don’t leave corrosion stains. See our timber screws.
              • Expect a little resin to bleed from knots and fresh cuts. It stops as the timber dries.

              Looking after Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir doesn’t need treating to perform, but left bare it weathers to silver grey and loses its reddish pink tone. Most customers oil it within the first few months of installation, especially in exposed spots, using a UV protective oil made for softwoods, then refresh it every two or three years. You’ll find suitable finishes in our exterior wood oils.
