30 mm fire retardant MDF 3050×1220 mm is the biggest board in this range. It is ordered for full height panels that have to read as solid rather than applied.
Tall column casings, full height feature panels, deep reveals on a three metre opening and continuous bench seating are what it gets used for. At 30 mm the piece behaves like a slab: it takes a deep rebate or a stepped edge cut straight into it and still has material left behind the detail, which is how a panel avoids looking like board on battens. It is the same rated board as the rest of the range, red through the mass and classified Euroclass B under EN 13501-1, which means it is slow to catch and adds very little to a fire, with the letters quoted beside the class covering how much smoke it makes and whether burning pieces fall from it.
Cutting and handling
At 87.1 kg over three metres it is beyond a comfortable two person lift and should be planned as a proper handling operation, with a trolley or a third person and a route measured beforehand. No site saw will cut this in a single pass, so work out your cutting list early and ask about having sizes cut before delivery. Sharp TCT blade, slow feed, extraction, P2 or P3 mask, and somewhere to stack the offcuts, because there will be heavy ones.
Fixing and painting
Everything holds at this depth, including long screws driven into the edge, so build the substructure to carry the weight rather than worrying about the fixings pulling out. Glue and screw the joints as usual. Prime the edges three times if the piece is exposed on two sides, sanding lightly between coats; a 30 mm face of end grain will otherwise sit visibly flatter than the sanded surface next to it.
Where not to use it
Weight is not strength in a structure, and the board is still for dry interior use only. Unless the panel genuinely needs the depth, 18 mm will do the job at a third of the handling. Where the piece fits in a standard sheet, take the 2440 mm board instead. The complete range is on the fire retardant MDF page and the MDF page.
