25 mm fire retardant MDF 3050×1220 mm is a specialist buy for tall, heavily loaded joinery in rated buildings. It is one of the heaviest boards we handle.
Full height library and retail shelving is the main use. A 3 m upright cut from a 25 mm board stays straight under a wall of loaded shelves in a way that a thinner or spliced upright will not, and the shelves themselves can span wider between supports. Deep window reveals on tall openings and long counter tops are the other regular jobs, and both benefit from the same absence of a joint. Same specification throughout: red core and a B-s1,d0 classification under EN 13501-1, which means the board is slow to catch, gives off very little smoke, and sheds nothing burning while it does.
Cutting and handling
Treat this as a mechanical handling job rather than a carry. At 72.6 kg it is two strong people minimum, on edge, with the route cleared and somewhere flat to land it. Very few site saws will take 25 mm at any angle, so decide what you are cutting yourself and what you want cut before delivery. Sharp TCT blade, slow steady feed, full length support, extraction and a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Fixings hold well at this depth and a long screw into the edge will not break out a face, which is what makes it suitable for uprights carrying real load. Glue and screw, pilot close to edges, and prime edges generously since 25 mm of end grain takes a lot of primer before it seals. Finish a tall upright on both faces before it is stood up, because the back of a fixed upright is gone for good once the shelving is in.
Where not to use it
Thickness is not structure: this is still a non load bearing panel for dry interiors. If the piece fits in a standard sheet, the 2440 mm board is far more practical to get into a building. Every thickness is set out on the fire retardant MDF page, with the wider range on the MDF page.
