25 mm fire retardant MDF is the heavy end of the range. It gets bought for a specific reason: a surface that has to stay flat with widely spaced supports underneath it.
Library and retail shelving, deep window reveals, counter tops, stair strings and column casings are the usual jobs. The board is the same L-MDF FR specification as every other thickness here, red through the mass and classified B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1, which means it is slow to catch, gives off very little smoke, and drops nothing burning as it goes.
Cutting and handling
At 58 kg it needs two people and somewhere flat to land it. Many cordless saws will not cut 25 mm at full depth and none will at an angle, so work out what you can cut before the delivery rather than after. Use a sharp TCT blade and let it feed at its own rate, because forcing a board this dense burns the cut. Extraction, P2 or P3 mask, and expect to sweep red dust out of the corners of the room afterwards.
Fixing and painting
The edge here holds a screw properly and will take a deep routed profile without breaking out, which is why it turns up on exposed counter fronts. Glue and screw, pilot close to edges, and prime the end grain generously because a 25 mm edge soaks up a surprising amount. Two coats of MDF primer, sanded between, before any topcoat, and a third along an exposed front edge.
Where not to use it
Thickness does not make it structural and it does not make it damp tolerant, so keep it out of wet areas and off load paths. If you only need a rated lining rather than a rigid surface, 12 mm costs far less and handles far more easily. The 3050 mm sheet is the same board for longer runs. The full range is on the fire retardant MDF page and the MDF page.
