6 mm fire retardant MDF is the thinnest rated board in the range. It goes on surfaces that have to meet a reaction to fire requirement without adding any real thickness to what is already there.
The board is coloured red right through, and that is a practical feature rather than decoration. On a fit out where an inspector wants to know that the panel in the wall is the rated one, a red core settles it without paperwork. It is classified Euroclass B under EN 13501-1, which means it resists catching light and does not feed a fire the way untreated MDF does. The letters after it cover smoke and burning droplets: s1 is almost no smoke, s2 a limited amount, and d0 means nothing falls off the panel while it burns. Which pair applies varies with thickness, so check yours against the spec.
Cutting and handling
At 13.9 kg a sheet it cuts on a bench with a straight edge and a track saw without help. Use a fine toothed blade, keep the good face upwards and lay a scrap underneath, because 6 mm chips easily along the underside of a cut. The dust is red, it is fine, and it will mark a pale carpet, so work outdoors or with extraction and wear a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
This thickness needs continuous support or a frame behind it. Fix through the face with pins or screws, never into the edge, and pilot anything that lands within a few millimetres of one. Prime with a dedicated MDF primer, two coats sanded between, then topcoat. Check any decorative laminate or heavy coating against the fire spec first, because a combustible finish bonded to the face can undo the panel’s classification.
Where not to use it
It is a dry interior board and it is not load bearing. Water swells the core permanently, so bathrooms and utility rooms want a moisture resistant panel instead. At 6 mm it will not span or carry, and if the surface takes any handling go to 12 mm. For a full height lining without a joint, the 3050 mm sheet is the same board in a longer panel. Everything else is on the fire retardant MDF page and the MDF page.
