15 mm fire retardant MDF exists for the jobs where 12 mm flexes and 18 mm is more board than the detail allows.
In practice that means shelving in a rated fit out, door linings and casings where a set opening has to be filled exactly, and panel work sitting in a frame with a fixed rebate depth. It is the same L-MDF FR board to EN 622-5 as the rest of the range, red through the mass and classified B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1. Read that as three separate things: the board resists catching light, it gives off very little smoke if it does, and no burning material falls off it. It also carries E1, CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI for formaldehyde.
Cutting and handling
At 34.8 kg it is a manageable one person lift on the flat and easier with two up a stair. Cut with a sharp fine toothed blade and let it feed steadily; forcing a dense board burns the edge and takes the temper out of the teeth. Keep the sheet supported along the cut line rather than at the ends. Extraction and a P2 or P3 mask, and remember the dust is red and gets into everything it lands on.
Fixing and painting
Fifteen millimetres is enough for a shelf pin and for most cabinet hardware, though a confirmat screw will not reach full depth in the edge. Pilot every edge fixing and keep it centred in the thickness. Prime faces and edges together, two coats with a light sand between, and check any bonded decorative finish against the fire spec before committing to it. A heavy combustible laminate on the face can pull the whole build up out of classification even though the panel itself is rated.
Where not to use it
Not load bearing, not for wet or humid rooms, and not a replacement for a fire resisting lining board. If the shelf is carrying real weight or spanning further, 25 mm is the sensible step. The longer sheet in this thickness is the 3050 mm panel. Every thickness we carry is listed on the fire retardant MDF page, with the rest of the boards on the MDF page.
