12 mm fire retardant MDF is the general purpose thickness in the range, heavy enough to feel solid on a wall and thin enough to stay easy to handle.
Most of what this thickness does is commercial fit out: corridor and stairwell linings, riser door facings, boxing that has to keep its rating, and panel work in hotels, schools and hospitals where the fire spec is part of the building consent. The red core is the giveaway on site, and the panel is classified B-s2,d0 under EN 13501-1. That reads as three things: it is slow to catch, it gives off only a limited amount of smoke if it does, and nothing burning drops off the board.
Cutting and handling
At 27.9 kg one person can still lift a sheet onto trestles, and a sharp blade with plenty of teeth gives an edge you can prime straight away. This board is denser than standard MDF, so expect to change blades sooner and to feel the saw working harder through a rip. Support the sheet across the cut. Red dust travels, so extraction, a P2 or P3 mask, and sweep as you go rather than at the end of the day. It shows up on a light floor long after you think you have cleared it.
Fixing and painting
At 12 mm the edge takes a screw reasonably well, though a pilot hole is still the right habit and a glue and screw butt joint is stronger than either on its own. Two coats of MDF primer sanded between, then whatever topcoat the scheme calls for. If a laminate or a decorative film is going on the face, confirm it is compatible with the assembly’s fire classification before it is bonded down.
Where not to use it
Dry interiors only, and nothing structural. It will not survive a wet room, and it is not a substitute for a fire resisting board where the requirement is about resistance rather than reaction to fire. For a full storey height lining in one piece use the 3050 mm sheet, and for cabinet work go up to 18 mm. The full list is on the fire retardant MDF page and the MDF page.
