18 mm fire retardant MDF is the thickness this range is built around, and the one most orders are for. Wall linings, cabinets and finished panel work in rated assemblies all land here.
At 18 mm the panel is classified B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1, which is the strictest tier of Euroclass B: very low smoke and no flaming droplets. Those two sub letters are what a specifier actually reads, because smoke and falling burning material do more harm in a fire than flame spread does. It also meets ASTM E84 Class 1, so the same board passes inspection to the North American standard, and it is red through the mass so nobody has to take your word for which panel went in.
Cutting and handling
A two person lift at 41.8 kg, or one person and a sheet trolley. Use a TCT blade with 60 teeth or more for clean cross cuts; the board is denser than standard MDF and a coarse blade leaves a woolly edge. Support the panel along the cut rather than at its ends. Extraction or outdoors, and a P2 or P3 mask, since the dust off a dense board is fine and there is plenty of it.
Fixing and painting
This is the thickness cabinet hardware is designed around, and confirmat screws with glued butt joints give the strongest assembly. Pre drill before any screw goes near an edge. Prime with a dedicated MDF primer, two coats sanded between, edges included. Heavy combustible coatings and laminates can degrade the classification, so check the whole build up against the spec rather than the panel alone.
Where not to use it
Dry, non load bearing applications only. Wet the core and it swells for good, so a moisture resistant board belongs in bathrooms and utility rooms. It is also a reaction to fire panel, which is not the same thing as a fire resisting board, so read which one the spec is asking for. The same panel in a full storey height sheet is the 3050 mm board. The rest of the thicknesses sit on the fire retardant MDF page, and the other grades on the MDF page.
