22 mm moisture resistant MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. A heavy green board for horizontal surfaces in damp rooms, where the panel has to carry weight and stay flat.
What this board is for
This is where MR MDF stops being carcassing and starts being worktop. It is used for vanity tops and counter surfaces under a laminate or a solid surface, for window boards in rooms that go through daily condensation, for heavy duty shelving in utility rooms and plant cupboards, and for bench and counter tops in commercial washrooms.
The reason the extra thickness matters on a horizontal surface is deflection over time rather than strength on day one. A worktop that spans between two cabinets will take a set under its own weight and whatever sits on it, and humidity accelerates that. A heavier board simply holds its line for longer.
Worktops and cut outs
If the panel is a worktop, the cut outs are the weak point, not the span. A sink or basin cut out removes material exactly where the top is already working hardest, and it exposes a long run of raw edge in the wettest part of the room.
Seal every millimetre of a cut out before the sink goes in, including the underside of the rim where nobody looks. Water sits in that corner permanently on a basin that gets used, and it is the single most common place an MR MDF worktop swells. A bead of sealant on top of a sealed edge is belt and braces worth having.
Cutting, fixing and finishing
Use a sharp fine tooth blade and support the sheet on both sides of the cut, because at this weight the offcut will drop and tear the underside as it goes.
The board holds a screw well, though pilot drilling near an edge is still worth the time. Use stainless or properly plated fixings throughout: bright zinc corrodes in a damp room and bleeds rust through the paint. For joints carrying load, use dowels, biscuits or a mechanical fitting.
