12 mm moisture resistant MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. The point at which the green board stops being a lining material and starts being something you can build furniture from.
What this board is for
Bath panels are the classic use, and they are a good illustration of why this thickness exists: a bath panel has to be rigid enough not to drum when it is knocked, thin enough to sit inside the bath rim without packing, and light enough for one person to take off and put back when the trap needs attention. This board does all three.
Beyond that: drawer fronts and drawer boxes in vanity units, light cabinet doors, shelving inside carcasses over short spans, and boxing in soil pipes and cisterns where the finished box has to look like joinery rather than like a boxed pipe.
The edge becomes visible work
This is the first thickness in the range where the edge is deep enough to be seen and handled rather than hidden in a groove. On a bath panel or a drawer front the edge is at eye level and gets touched, so it needs more than a coat of primer.
Seal it properly, or better, lip it. A solid timber lipping on a bath panel edge takes the knocks that the panel edge would otherwise absorb, and it can be sanded and repainted rather than replaced when it eventually gets scuffed. Whatever you use, do it before final sanding so the joint disappears under the paint.
Cutting, fixing and finishing
Use a sharp fine tooth blade and support the offcut so it does not tear the underside as it drops. Pilot drill before screwing near an edge and use coarse threaded MDF screws, in stainless or a properly plated finish rather than bright zinc, which will corrode and bleed rust through the paint in a damp room.
Be realistic about shelving: at this thickness a shelf will visibly sag well before a metre, and damp air makes that worse rather than better. Keep spans short or stiffen the front edge with a lipping.
