12 mm moisture resistant MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. The first thickness in the green range that behaves like a structural panel rather than a lining board, in the length that reaches the ceiling.
What the extra length is for
At 12 mm the board holds an edge screw, takes a shelf load over a short span and stays flat in a tall panel. The jobs that follow from that are all full height ones: utility and boot room cupboard sides, tall larder carcasses, wardrobe gables in a converted attic, shower and bath boxing that has to be rigid enough to tile onto, and shelving uprights that run from skirting to ceiling.
Cut those from the standard sheet and you are joining a carcass side or scarfing an upright, which is slow and never quite invisible. At 3050 mm the whole side comes out of one piece, square and dead straight, and the run is faster on site as well as better looking.
If the panel needs to be wider than 1220 mm rather than longer, the 3050 x 1525 mm sheet is the one to reach for. Where the run is short, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet costs less for the same board.
Weight and handling
A full sheet is around 34 kg. That is a genuine two person lift, and awkward with it, because the length puts the load a long way from whoever is carrying the far end. Move it on edge and break it down on a trestle or a sacrificial sheet rather than trying to work off a full panel on the floor.
Rip the long dimension first with a track saw if you have one. A sheet at this length is hard to feed accurately through a table saw single handed, and any wander shows up as a tapered carcass side.
Sealing and finishing
Seal every cut edge before the panel goes in, especially the bottom edge of a carcass side that meets a floor and any cut out around pipework. Water sits at the bottom of a cupboard long before it reaches anything else.
Prime the face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and use a moisture tolerant topcoat in a kitchen or bathroom. For the full range and how the grades differ, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
