25 mm moisture resistant MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. A substantial green panel in the long format, for worktops, benches and shelving that have to look and behave solid.
What the extra length is for
At 25 mm the board stops being a sheet material and starts behaving like a slab. It carries load over a long span without visible deflection, it machines to a clean profiled edge, and it reads as a solid worktop once it is painted. Utility and laundry benches, island and peninsula substrates, deep window boards on a wide reveal, heavy shelving in a boot room, and vanity tops with an undermount basin all belong here.
The long sheet matters because those pieces are usually long. A worktop or a bench that runs the length of a utility room comes out of one piece at 3050 mm, so there is no butt joint sitting in the middle of the working surface waiting to swell. Profiled edges also run cleanly for the full length, which a jointed top never quite does.
Where the piece is shorter than 2440 mm, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board for the same work.
Weight and handling
A full sheet is roughly 69 kg. Two people at an absolute minimum, on edge, with the route cleared first. Getting one of these up a stairs or through a standard doorway without marking anything takes planning rather than effort.
Store it flat and fully supported. A panel this heavy left leaning takes a permanent set within days, and a bowed worktop is not something you fix by screwing it down harder.
Cut it on the flat with a track saw. Feeding a panel of this weight and length through a table saw single handed is how cuts wander and fingers get close to the blade.
Machining, sealing and finishing
The depth is what makes a routed bullnose, chamfer or pencil round worth doing, so take the profile in two or three light passes rather than one heavy one. A single deep pass burns the core and leaves a fuzzy edge that no amount of sanding fully cleans up.
Seal every edge, and particularly the profiled front edge and any cut out for a sink, tap or hob, before the top goes in. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and finish with a moisture tolerant topcoat. For the full range and how the grades differ, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
