38 mm moisture resistant MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. The heaviest board in the green range, in the long format, for counters, treads and structural joinery where nothing thinner will do.
What the extra length is for
38 mm is a specification thickness rather than a general purpose one. It turns up in bar and reception counters, commercial serving tops, stair treads and landings in a painted staircase, heavy bench tops, deep window seats, and load bearing shelving that has to span without a bearer. In a damp environment, a wet room, a plant room, a commercial kitchen or a wash up area, this is the board that gives you that depth with a binder rated for humid conditions.
The long sheet is what makes a full length counter possible. At 3050 mm a bar front or a serving top runs unbroken, so the deep exposed edge is continuous and there is no joint on the working surface. On a counter, that joint is the first thing anyone leaning on it sees.
It is also the thickness for laminated or veneered tops where a substrate has to stay dead flat under a bonded surface across a long span.
Where the piece is shorter than 2440 mm, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is the cheaper board.
Weight and handling
A full sheet is over 100 kg. That is mechanical handling or three to four people, on edge, with the route measured beforehand. Do not plan on bringing one into a first floor room whole. Cut it down at ground level or in the van and carry manageable pieces.
Store it dead flat on bearers at close centres. At this weight a panel deforms under its own mass if it is poorly supported, and a bowed counter substrate cannot be pulled flat.
Machining, sealing and finishing
Cut it on the flat with a track saw and a sharp blade, and expect to make two passes on a deep section. Profile the exposed edge in several light passes so the cutter clears the waste instead of burning it, and sand the profile properly, because a deep painted edge at eye level shows every flat spot.
Seal every edge before installation, and every cut out for a sink, tap or service run. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer, sand between coats, and finish with a moisture tolerant topcoat suited to the traffic the piece will take.
