9 mm moisture resistant MDF in the 3050 x 1220 mm sheet. The lighter green board in the longer format, for full height panelling, boxing and bath panels with no joint across the run.
Why the longer sheet
At 9 mm the board is stiff enough to span between battens and hold a fixing, but light enough to handle single handed once it is cut. That combination is what makes it the usual choice for panelled walls, bath panels, boxing around a soil stack, duct casings and cupboard backs in a damp room.
All of those jobs run vertically, and all of them look wrong with a joint across the middle. A 3050 mm sheet reaches the ceiling in almost every room, so a battened panelled wall goes up in whole panels and a boxing runs floor to ceiling in one length. Nothing to fill, nothing to tape, and nothing for water to work into behind the paint.
Where the run is shorter, the 2440 x 1220 mm sheet does the same job for less.
Handling the length
A full sheet weighs roughly 25 kg, so this is a two person lift because of the size rather than the mass. Carry it on edge. Taken flat and lifted at the ends it sags through the middle, and a sagged board goes onto the wall with a bow you will be fighting all the way up.
Check the cutting area before it arrives. A sheet at this length needs clear run in front of and behind the saw, and plenty of workshops are set out for the standard sheet only.
Fixing and sealing
Screw it to battens at roughly 400 mm centres, pre-drilled and countersunk, using stainless or properly plated screws. Bright zinc corrodes in a humid room and bleeds rust through the paint within a season. Adhesive and pins are enough where the board is facing off a solid surface.
Seal every cut edge before the panel goes in, including the cut outs for pipework, wastes and access panels, then prime the face with an MDF primer before the topcoat. For the full range and how the grades differ, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
