9 mm moisture resistant MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. A lining board with enough substance to stand on its own across a panel, for damp rooms where the thinner sheets feel flimsy.
What this board is for
This is the thickness for bathroom and utility panelling that is fixed to battens rather than glued flat to a wall, for cabinet backs and under sink carcass panels that take knocks, and for boxing in pipework and cisterns where the panel has to be rigid enough to stay flat between fixings but light enough to lift into an awkward space alone.
It is also a common choice for bath panel facings and for removable access panels, because it holds its shape when handled repeatedly and does not flex enough to crack a painted finish along the fixing line.
Spans and fixing centres
The practical question at this thickness is how far apart the supports are. Fixed to battens at around 400 mm centres it will sit flat and stay flat. Stretch that to 600 mm and you will start to see a slight dish between fixings once the panel is painted and the room has been through a few humid cycles, which is the sort of defect nobody notices until the light catches it.
If the panel is spanning free on two edges only, keep the run short or add a mid rail. Capturing it on all four sides in a groove or a frame is always the better answer where the detail allows.
Sealing, fixing and handling
Seal every cut edge before the panel goes into a wet room, including cut outs around pipes, wastes and access hatches, which is where water actually finds its way in. A thinned primer or a dedicated edge sealer is enough; the important thing is that nothing is left as bare fibre.
Pilot drill before screwing near an edge and use coarse threaded MDF screws in stainless or a proper plated finish. Bright zinc corrodes in a damp room and bleeds rust through the paint around every fixing, which is the most common way good joinery starts looking tired.
