30 mm moisture resistant MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. A heavy substrate board for damp environments, specified where a surface has to carry load across a span and hold its line for years.
What this board is for
Commercial washroom and changing room counters, heavy vanity tops, laboratory and workshop bench substrates, plant room shelving, and worktops spanning wider than a domestic cabinet run. It also appears as a plinth and pedestal material in humid public interiors, where the mass is doing structural work as much as the surface is.
The case for stepping up to this weight is span. A lighter board carries the same load over a short run, but as the distance between supports grows, deflection climbs quickly and a top that looked fine on installation develops a visible dip a year later. If the design cannot take an extra bearer or a mid support, the thickness has to do the work instead.
Specifying it properly
Two things are worth settling before the sheet is cut. Know your support centres: this board will span further than the lighter grades but it is not structural timber, and past roughly a metre unsupported it will still take a set under sustained load.
And seal it completely, both faces and every edge, before anything is fixed to it or laid on it. On a heavy board in a wet room the temptation is to treat the mass as protection in itself. It is not. A 30 mm sheet with unsealed edges swells exactly like a thin one, just more slowly and more expensively.
Cutting, handling and fixing
A full sheet weighs roughly 67 kg. That is beyond a comfortable two person lift over any distance and is a trolley job in practice. Support the sheet on both sides of every cut so the offcut does not drop under its own mass.
Use a sharp fine tooth blade and check the saw will take the depth in one pass. The board holds a screw well, though pilot drilling near an edge remains sensible, and every fixing in a damp room should be stainless or properly plated.
