18 mm MR MDF in the standard 2440 x 1220 mm sheet. The workhorse of the moisture resistant range and the thickness most bathroom and kitchen joinery is built from.
Why 18 mm MR MDF is the default
It is substantial enough to carcass from, hang a door on and take cabinet hardware without compromise, while still being a sheet two people can handle and a saw will cut cleanly in one pass. That is why 18 mm MR MDF turns up on almost every wet room job: vanity units, bathroom and utility carcassing, doors and drawer fronts, boxed in cisterns, panelling, and commercial washroom fit out.
If you are unsure which thickness a job needs and the panel is doing structural work rather than lining something, this is the board to order. It is the thickness most joinery drawings assume unless they say otherwise, and the one most hardware and fixings are designed around.
MR MDF, moisture resistant MDF and green MDF are the same board. The green tint runs through the thickness, so anyone on site can see the right sheet went into the wet room.
Also available in a 3050 x 1220 mm sheet for full height panelling, and a 3050 x 1525 mm sheet where the extra width saves a joint.
Cutting and fixing
Use a sharp fine tooth blade and support the offcut so it does not tear the underside as it drops. Pilot drill before screwing and use coarse threaded MDF screws; for joints under real load use dowels, biscuits or a mechanical fitting rather than the fibre.
Every screw, hinge and runner in a damp room should be stainless or properly plated. Bright zinc corrodes and bleeds rust through the paint around each fixing, the most common reason bathroom joinery looks tired long before the board has any complaint.
Sealing, spans and finishing
Seal or lip every cut edge before installation. The face is dense and takes a coating well; the edge is open fibre and will drink whatever reaches it. Prime edges before faces, and use a primer intended for MDF rather than a general purpose one.
Even at this thickness a shelf will deflect over a long span, so lip the front edge or add a bearer past about 800 mm. A full sheet weighs roughly 40 kg, so plan two people or a panel trolley. For the full range and the difference between the grades, see the Moisture Resistant MDF page.
